<넘버스 스테이션>은 내 선에서 알기 어려운 대상의 실체를 찾아보는 과정을 담고 있다. ‘난수 방송’이란 특정 주파수를 통해 숫자나 단어 등을 조합한 메시지를 전송하는 것으로 난수표를 소지하거나 이를 문장으로 풀이할 수 있어야만 그 의미를 파악할 수 있다. 불특정한 시간대에 라디오를 통해 누구나 접근할 수 있는 특성을 가진 이것은 소리를 들을 수 있을지언정 그 뜻은 알기가 어렵다. 라디오 수신기를 통해 나열되는 숫자들을 가만히 듣고 있자면 그것들이 뜻하는 바를 모르더라도 마치 내가 은밀한 임무를 수행하고 있는 것 같은 기분에 사로잡히곤 한다. 이로써, 난수방송의 정확한 의미를 파악하는 것이 목적이라기보다 실체를 향해 찾아가는 과정 자체나 대상을 바라보는 나의 태도를 드러내는 것이 중요해진다.

<Number Station> is the transmission of messages that combine numbers and words through a certain frequency, and the meaning can be understood only when you have a table of random numbers or can interpret them into sentences. It has the characteristics that anyone can access through the radio during an unspecified time, so it is hard to know the meaning even though it can hear the sound. Listening to the numbers makes me feel as if I were carrying out a secret mission, even if I don’t know what they mean. As a result, it becomes more important to reveal my attitude toward the object than finding out the exact meaning of numbers.
