하나의 장소가 이미지로 기억되는 경우가 있다. 주로 미디어에 빈번히 노출된 고정적 이미지의 장소가 그러한데 그 장소는 특정한 구도의 샷과 장면의 반복을 통해 우리의 기억에 각인된다. 예를 들자면, 이순신 장군 동상을 중심으로 펼쳐진 광화문 광장의 모습이나 항공 뷰로 천천히 조망하는 백두산 천지의 모습 같은 것들이다. 그것들은 특정한 장소에 대한 개별 기억이라기보다는 집단의 이념을 내포한 구축되고 학습된 이미지들이다.
판문점도 위와 같은 사례라 할 수 있다. 한국 현대사를 대표하는 장소이자 2018년 남북정상회담으로 다시 한 번 주목받은 판문점은 그 접근과 출입의 어려움과는 별개로 우리에게 매우 익숙하다. 일렬로 늘어선 회담장 건물 사이로 반쯤 몸을 가린 채로 경계를 서는 남북의 군인들과 시대를 빗겨나간 오래된 건물의 모습은 판문점이라는 곳을 대립과 긴장이 연속된 시간이 멈춰버린 역사적 사건의 장소로 기억되게 만들었다.
그렇지만 한편으로 나는 이러한 상징적인 장소를 다르게 바라보는 것도 흥미롭지 않을까라는 생각이 든다. 전쟁이 곧 종식될 것이라는 당시 생각으로 이름 붙여진 임시 회담장의 건물 약칭 (Temporary) T1, T2, T3처럼, 이 곳이 일시적인 사건이 벌어지는 연극 무대와도 같은 곳이라면 어떨까. 사실 판문점에서 벌어지는 많은 정치적, 이념적 이벤트 역시 (급변하는 국제 정세가 그러하듯) 하나의 연극과도 같지 않았던가. 그러한 김에 나도 이 곳에서 벌어지는 일시적인 픽션을 상상해보아도 좋겠다는 생각이 든다.

Sometimes, a place is remembered as an image. That is the case mostly with places that contain fixed images that are frequently exposed through the media, and such places are engraved in our memory through the repetition of specifically framed shots and scenes. Some examples are the view of Gwanghwamun Square that unfolds around the statue of Admire Yi Sun-sin or the view of the Cheonji lake at the top of the Mt.Paektu that is slowly scanned from an aerial view. These images are not so much memories of specific places as established and learned images that carry group ideologies.
Panmunjom is one such example. As a major place in the modern history of Korea and one that has been spotlighted anew because of the 2018 inter-Korean summit, Panmunjom is very familiar to us, even though it remains quite inaccessible to the general public. The images of the soldiers of the two Koreas who stand guard with half of their bodies covered in between the meeting houses and the old buildings that seem out of place with the times have turned Panmunjom into a place of historic events where time, dotted with confrontation and tension, has come to a stop.
On the other hand, I think it would be interesting to take such symbolic places from some other perspectives. What if this place is like a theatrical stage where temporary events take place, as is suggested by the abbreviated names of the buildings (temporary; T1, T2, and T3) in the temporary meeting venue? In fact, is it not the case that so many political and ideological events that unfolded in Panmunjom were like theater shows (just like in rapidly changing international politics)? Thus, I think I may as well imagine a temporary piece of fiction that is set in this place.
